My friend Leslie is kind, uncompromising, and ruthlessly funny -- as quick to laugh at herself as to laugh at you, with nothing but love in either event. In different days, better in their own way, Leslie was a local. At some point she broke our hearts and moved east.
On a breezy, autumn afternoon, Leslie's back in town for marathon weekend. We meet on the patio of a "neighborhood Italian focacceria." I'm in my favorite sweater: soft wool, a hood, and honestly earned elbow patches.
When I ask for a drink recommendation, the staff suggests a lovely, sunset-red cocktail with no hesitation -- their new favorite, a Paper Plane.
Leslie and I spend 3+ hours catching up over cannoli, tea, and cocktails. It reminds me of old times.
Eventually, inevitably, she needs to make her way toward other friends, dinner, and night-before-the-race rituals. We wrap it up and hug it out... an autumn afternoon well spent.
